Biography:
David Rocastle made a name for himself at Arsenal and took a central role in the Championship winning sides of 1989 and 1991. He gained international recognition for England gaining 14 caps. After 218 league games for Arsenal, he was surprisingly transferred to Leeds in July 1992 for £2million. Injuries affected his spell in Yorkshire and he made just 25 league appearances for Leeds. He was exchanged for David White of Manchester City but quickly returned (after 21 matches) to England with a transfer to Chelsea. Injuries limited his opportunities at Stamford Bridge and at the end of the 1996/97 season, he had made only 29 games for the Blues. He came to Norwich on loan in January 1997 in an attempt to resurrect his career. He made his City debut against Grimsby Town on 18th January 1997 in a Norwich midfield bereft of Andy Johnson and Mike Milligan. Rocastle impressed the Norwich fans with his intelligent passing and commitment and Mike Walker extended his loan spell for a second month. However Norwich were unable to meet his wage demands and Rocastle returned to Chelsea after 11 games in yellow and green. He has been linked with a move to Italian side Fiorentina but spent August 1997 on trial at Aberdeen. In early October 1997, Rocastle joined Division Three side Hull City on a three month loan period and he scored on his debut in a 3-0 victory over Scarborough. One cannot wonder if Norwich's bid for a play-off place last season would have improved if Rocastle had stayed in Norfolk. A further question arises as to whether Hull have more financial resources than Norwich to attract players like Rocastle. New football magazine Football World reported in April 1998 that Rocastle joined Malaysian side Sabah following a brief trial for them. In February 2001, it was announced that David is suffering from non-Hodgkins lymphona. He passed away on the night of 30th March 2001.
