Biography:
Jose Raul Capablanca y Graupera (November 19, 1888-March 8, 1942) was world champion from 1921-1927 but was the strongest from c.1919 till 1927 when he lost all to Alexander Alekhine. Even after he suffered a mild stroke in 1938, he only lost 3 games that year! He holds a record that has yet to be beaten: in 248 games, he lost 19. The 19 only covers 7.7% of his matches. Only Anatoly Karpov and Gary Kasparov have gotten the closest with 9% each. Capablanca's worst ennemy was becoming overconfident. In 1927, he had to struggle depressively against the mighty Alexander Alekhine but lost the title +6 =25 -3. The world was surprised and all chess players thought differently about Alekhine. They believed that he would now leave Capablanca in the dust. Not so. Capablanca was just never ever able to play as fast anymore. His new ennemy was time. He finaly beat Lasker in 1936 at Moscow but it was not a chance at the world championship. That was the first time they had to face since the title match in 1927. Even though he lost the title to Alekhine, he still obtained a better overall win: he beat him 9 times, drew 33 times and lost only 7. Mikhail Botvinnik was able to tie Capablanca with +1 =5 -1 and so did Akiba Rubinstein who had a +1 =7 -1. Only Paul Keres was able to beat Capablanca: +0 =5 -1.
