Biography:
Rafter, Patrick (1972- ) The third-youngest of nine children, Patrick Rafter began playing tennis at the age of five and turned professional in 1991. In 1993 Rafter reached his first tour semi-final in Indianapolis, including the defeat of world No. 1 Pete Sampras , and was named ATP Tour Newcomer of the Year. The following year he won his first title in Manchester and reached No. 24 in the rankings , however a wrist injury hampered his tournament appearances in 1995 and 1996. 1997 was a golden year for Rafter. He won the US Open - the first Australian to win a grand slam singles event since 1987 , reached six other ATP Tour finals and rocketed up the world rankings from 62 to 2. Rafter was also a doubles semi-finalist with Mark Philippoussis at both Wimbledon and the US Open in 1996. He was voted one of the world's 10 sexiest men by People magazine in the USA in November 1997. In 1998 Rafter won the Canadian Open , the ATP Championship in Ohio and the Hamlet Cup.
