CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
• Won 37 titles (14 singles, 20 doubles, 3 mixed doubles) during a 15-year career. Retired in 1997.
• Runner-up at Wimbledon in 1990, becoming the first African-American woman to reach the final of a Grand Slam tournament since Althea Gibson in 1958. En route to the final, defeated Monica Seles and Steffi Graf in succession before losing to Martina Navratilova.
• Won three Grand Slam tournament titles in mixed doubles (1987 Australian Open and 1988 Wimbledon w/Sherwood Steward, 1990 Wimbledon w/Rick Leach).
• Won Olympic gold medal in doubles (w/Pam Shriver) and bronze medal in singles during the 1988
Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
• Ranked in world’s Top 10, 1983-90, peaking at No. 4 at year-end 1989 and throughout much of 1990.
• In 1989, went into record books as the last player to defeat Chris Evert in a tournament match, defeating Evert in the US Open quarterfinals.
• As a junior, won Wimbledon and US Open junior singles titles in 1981 and was the world’s No. 1-ranked junior girl. |
