Biography:
One of Wales' first soccer superstars, who played in both the red and blue Manchester shirts - a legend for both City and United. Billy Meredith was born in Chirk on 30th July 1874. His football career began when he played part-time for local teams, while working at Black Park Colliery, near Chirk. In 1894 he signed to Manchester City as a professional football player. Over the rest of his career he was to remain closely associated with both of Manchester's football teams. He had a successful career with City for more than 10 years until he was involved in a bribery scandal. He was accused of bribing a player on the opposite side to lose a match. His career was interrupted as he was suspended as a result of the scandal. In 1906 he signed to Manchester United and began playing for them as soon as his suspension was lifted. His football career took off again and he became a popular figure on the pitch, known for his runs down the wing which earned him the nickname 'Wizard of the Wing'. He left United in 1921 having scored 35 goals for the team, and returned to City, playing for them until four months before his 50th birthday. He also played for the Welsh national side, capping his international career with a 2-1 victory against England.
