Biography:
Steve Davis one of the greatest ambassadors of the game. Davis was the first to make a ratified maximum break in a major tournament who had a break of 147 against John Spencer in the Lada Classic at Oldham, Greater Manchester on 11 Jan 1982 and although he dropped three places down the world ranking list at the end of the 1996-97 season, he has equalled the record set by Dennis Taylor of spending 18 successive seasons in the top 16. He was the first person to compile Three Consecutive Century Breaks -: 108, 101 and 104 at Stoke-on-Trent , Staffs on 10 Sep 1988 ( RECORD ). Davis won the world championship for the first time in 1981, beating Doug Mountjoy 18-12 in the final, and although he was thrashed 10-1 by Tony Knowles in the first round a year later, it was to prove no more than a hiccup during his glory. Six Embassy world titles and a total of eight finals - seven in successive years - established Steve Davis as one of Britain's top sportsmen of the 1980s. He was the No.1 player in the eighties, before Hendry came along. Steve has won a total of 28 ranking and 73 major tournaments in his career. That's 73 wins from 99 finals! His most important wins are the six World Championships, six UK Championships and three Masters. After going two years without a tournament success, Davis proved he is still capable of competing with the best when he came from 8-4 down to defeat Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-8 in a Wembley final watched by a TV audience of nearly ten million. Steve has won various sporting awards and was made an MBE in 1988 , he has collected 71 titles - 28 of them being ranking events since he turned Pro ( 1978 ). The two times he lost in the World Championships, he was beaten first by Dennis Taylor ( 1985 ) and Joe Johnson ( 1986 ). His final against Dennis Taylor was probably the most memorable one as he was piped 18-17 on the final black, the game was watched by a record 18.5 million viewers on BBC 2. Davis summed up his feelings afterwards "It's all there in black and white." The Davis-Taylor final has become part of snooker folklore following their black-ball finish some 20 minutes after midnight. Davis is one of only four players to win both the World Championship and the UK Championship in the same year. Stephen Hendry, John Parrott and John Higgins are the others. Such was the legend of Steve 'Interesting' Davis on and off the green baize that he even became the subject of a latex puppet on the satirical television programme Spitting Image. The ultimate professional, Davis has been snooker's standard bearer in the modern era and while the eighties have long gone, his enthusiasm for the game is as great as ever. Together with Stephen Hendry and John Higgins he is also the only one to hold the World, UK and Masters titles at the same time. Has won a total of 28 ranking and 73 professional tournaments in his career. That's 73 wins from 99 finals. His most important wins are the six World Championships, six UK Championships and three Masters. He was the No.1 player in the eighties, before Hendry came along.
