His father was Alfonso XII and his mother was Maria Christina. In 1906, Alfonso married Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, granddaughter of Queen Victoria of Great Britain. There were many assassination attempts for the couple including one on their wedding day. The monarchy was facing many problems during those times via various political situations. He kept Spain out of World War I and then after a military dictatorship, that he supported, established in 1923 followed by elections in 1931 that showed overwhelming republican majority, he went into exile having “suspended the exercise of royal power”.
