John Boyd Dunlop was a Scottish born veterinarian that practiced in Belfast in the late 1800's. He is remembered for inventing the first commercially viable pneumatic tyre for his son's bicycle. (William Thomson is actually credited with being the first to patent the pneumatic tyre concept).
On realising the usefulness and improved ride that this allowed over conventional tyres of the period, he patented the idea. This patent helped to protect and advance his company, the well known Dunlop tyre company. |
